5 Days Into The High Atlas: from Marrakech to the Berber Villages and the summit of Toubkal

Your journey begins with a pickup from your Marrakech hotel or directly from the airport. A scenic drive brings you to the mountain village of Imi-Oughlad (1,450m), where you’ll meet your guide and mule team. After a short briefing, the trek begins. The route winds through the village of Ait Lahcen before climbing toward Tizi n’Tachet (2,000m). From the top, sweeping views of the Imlil and Azzaden valleys unfold. Lunch is enjoyed under shady juniper trees before descending into the lush valley toward Tizian. The day involves around 5–6 hours of walking. Overnight in a welcoming guesthouse.

Today’s trek takes you deeper into Berber country. Passing through several villages, you’ll witness traditional mountain life and meet locals along the way. The path leads through the beautiful Azzaden Valley to the village of Tizi Oussem, where you can pause to explore before ascending to Tizi Mzik Pass (2,500m). A detour takes you to the spectacular Tamsoult Waterfall, a highlight of the region. After lunch, descend to the highest village in the Imlil Valley (2,000m). Walking time: 6 hours. Overnight in a charming riad.

After breakfast, continue from Armed village along a mountain path leading to Sidi Chamharouch (2,400m), a village famous for its shrine and spiritual significance. Here you’ll pause for mint tea and a traditional lunch before continuing the climb toward the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m). Trekking time: around 6 hours. Overnight at the refuge camp.

The highlight of your Morocco adventure tour comes today with an early morning ascent of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The climb is challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking sunrise views stretching across the Sahara, High Atlas, and Anti-Atlas mountains. After time at the summit, descend back to the Refuge for rest. Walking time: approx. 5 hours. Overnight at the Refuge.

After breakfast, begin your descent toward Imlil, enjoying final views of the rugged peaks and valleys. The trek takes about 4 hours, with a descent of roughly 2,500 meters. Upon arrival in Imlil, you’ll transfer back to Marrakech, typically arriving by late afternoon.
